Saffron Tea: A Simple Guide to Brewing with Saffron Threads

Saffron tea is a simple way to enjoy the colour, aroma and flavour of whole saffron threads. The key is to let the threads bloom in a small amount of warm liquid before adding them to your cup.

What you need

  • A small pinch of whole saffron threads
  • Warm water
  • Your preferred tea, or plain hot water
  • Optional: cardamom, honey or a slice of lemon, according to taste

How to bloom saffron for tea

  1. Start with a small pinch. Saffron is concentrated, so begin lightly and adjust in later cups if you prefer a stronger flavour.
  2. Add warm water. Place the threads in a small cup or bowl and cover with warm water. Avoid aggressively boiling the threads.
  3. Wait 10–15 minutes. This gives the colour and aroma time to develop in the liquid.
  4. Pour into your tea. Add both the golden liquid and the threads to black tea, herbal tea, or hot water. Stir gently and taste before adding more saffron.

Easy ways to serve it

For a simple cup, add the bloomed saffron to plain hot water. For a fuller tea service, add it to brewed black tea. You can also pair saffron with cardamom or serve it alongside rice dishes, desserts and other meals where its aroma complements the menu.

How much saffron should you use?

There is no single thread count that suits every cup. The useful amount depends on the strength of your tea, the size of the serving and your taste. Start with a small pinch and build gradually rather than adding a large amount at once.

Storage tip

Keep whole saffron threads tightly sealed in a cool, dark and dry place. Close the package promptly after use to protect the aroma and colour.

Choose whole threads

Whole threads make it easier to see what you are using and to bloom the spice before it reaches your cup. ZARMAX offers whole Grade A saffron threads sourced from Herat, Afghanistan.
